When you first catch the virus you will start to notice symptoms within one to four days. They may start with a burning feeling that will either start in your nose or throat, after that you will experience sneezing, running nose, and all this accompanied by the feeling of being very tired. You need to remember that you are often most contagious during this early period and should probably stay home.

You will notice your nose running almost as soon as cold symptoms start. As the cold progresses your mucus should become much thicker and perhaps even a little dark. When a lot of people are experiencing a cold they notice a mild cough, this tends to not progress though. It could last a while even after your other symptoms have stopped though.

When you see dark mucus it does not mean that its time to panic. It does not always mean that there's an infection raging through your body. When its time to worry you will know. When its time to worry you will feel pain below your lungs when you breath. This happens to be a more sure sign of an infection. Often times we will see these type of symptoms when you have a different virus besides the flu though. If you think you may have an infection please see your doctor.

When we look at the cold itself its usually not very dangerous. This could change however if the cold comes into contact with a baby. They tend to go away without any medicine but you should keep a close eye on them. Colds may not be dangerous themselves but they do affect our immune system. They make us much more venerable.

When your cold is getting out of hand you can seek medical attention. Your doctor is the only person who will know for sure that it is not something more serious. He will do some test to make sure that there is no infection going on. If there is it does not mean that its time to panic. It usually just means that you need to get on a antibiotics to help combat it.

Always call your doctor if you experience the following symptoms, inability to swallow, earache or if you are pregnant or nursing. These could all mean that the cold is in fact something much more dangerous. Does not hurt to check.
